What To Wear To Pilates Class
Are you new to Pilates and not sure what to wear to class? It’s super important to get this right, so it’s not a silly question – as choosing the wrong clothing can lead to distraction for both you and your teacher.
The top 5 things to keep in mind when deciding on your Pilates outfit:
1. First and foremost, be comfy. Choosing clothing that allows you to move freely without restriction.
2. Be aware of pattern. We like to be able see your alignment to ensure your body is moving in exactly the right way. Sometimes, stripes and swirls can be off-putting or deceiving for your teacher to see this. So, clothes that show your alignment and curves are always a welcome choice for us.
3. Bottoms up! It’s often the case that we chuck on a pair of leggings without checking for wear and tear. It’s easy for leggings to thin or get holes around the bottom area, and as we spend lots of time upside down this might lead to exposure you haven’t accounted for – oops (myself included just last week!).
4. Safety. Zips and metal jewellery should be avoided, this can damage the upholstery of the equipment, and it can also get caught in the springs.
5. Bare feet or shoes? Always bare feet over shoes! Plus grippy socks such as Toe Sox work well.
So, what should you wear? There isn’t a prescriptive Pilates outfit, but we tend to wear leggings, joggers, or shorts (side note: men tend to double short for obvious reasons!)
If you’re still stuck on what to wear to your first class, please feel free to ask our team, we’re always happy to help.
Once you’re in the studio you will be focusing on your movement and technique, and you will be in a world of nurturing and sensory experience. Don’t worry about designer outfits, that isn’t a thing in our community. We just want you to have an amazing movement experience where you have fun and feel at home.
